CUPPLES, GEORGE, M. D. Medicine, as a profession, was practiced primitively by the chiefs of families, the heads of tribes and nations, and by generals and legislators. Subsequently it became an adjunct of the sacerdotal office, and for a long time the priests not only heard confessions of mental and moral depravity, and sought intercession therefor, but they likewise ministered to the diseases of the body. In the course of time, however, the art of surgery and science of medicine became a separate and distinct profession. Its high origin, and its object and purpose being that of assuaging pain and preservlng life, classes it as the most honorable, if indeed it be not the most exalted, of all professional callings.

Dr. George Cupples, the subject of this biographical memoir, is a distinguished physician and surgeon of San Antonio. He was born in Berwick county, Scotland, October 13, 1816. His father, Robert Cupples, who was also of Scotch nativity, became so proficient in operative surgery as to receive the appointment of surgeon in the Queen's royal navy, and maintained to his death a medical and surgical reputation freely conceded to him by all. The maiden name of his mother was Camilla Campbell. She was a native of England, and the daughter of John Campbell, a Highlander, and captain in the royal navy. Doctor George Cupples was brought up in Scotland. He received an exceedingly liberal education in the best institutions of learning in his native country. He resolved to become a practitioner of medicine and surgery, and, for the purpose of qualifying himself for the duties and responsibilities of that profession, entered the University of Edinburg, and graduated from the medical department of that world renowned institution. In 1836 he went to Spain. There he procured a position in the Spanish service, and for two years was on the hospital staff. In the winter of 1839 he went to Paris and there, under the supervision of the most learnd instructors of the age, pursued his professional studies with industry and perseverance. He also at the same time became an accomplished scholar in French literature. In 1843 he immigrated to Texas, and settled at San Antonio, where he has ever since resided, enjoying the highest distinction as a physician and surgeon. He was married in Paris in 1843, shortly previous to his immigration to America, to Miss Alexia Bourlard. She died in October, 1871, and he was again married in June, 1874, to Mrs. Laura Lagrave Sheahan, of San Antonio.

Doctor Cupples sincerely dedicated himself to his profession from the beginning; but his eminence as a citizen and superior qualifications as a medical man have frequently brought him to public notice in a professional and practical way, and hence he has been called upon to fill various offices in his municipality. In 1854 and in 1878 he was President of the Texas Medical Association. In 1876 he represented this association, in a delegate capacity, in the International Medical Congress held at Philadelphia.
